Radiocarbon dating has transformed our ability to interpret the archaeological record by providing reliable chronological frameworks. This lecture delves into the foundational concepts of radiocarbon dating, calibration, and modelling to achieve enhanced chronological resolution. Case studies will demonstrate the impact of radiocarbon dating in addressing critical archaeological questions, such as the timeline of human-Neanderthal interactions, the migration of humans into the Americas, and the interplay between human societies and climate in the past. The lecture also underscores the vital role of interdisciplinary approaches within archaeological science, incorporating stable isotope analysis and organic residue studies, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the archaeological record.
Lorena BECERRA VALDIVIA est une scientifique spécialisée en archéologie et en datation par radiocarbone. Elle est titulaire d'un MSc (2015) et d'un DPhil (2020) de l'Université d'Oxford. Ses recherches se concentrent sur la construction de chronologies à haute résolution à l'aide de la datation par radiocarbone et de la modélisation bayésienne, afin d'explorer les interactions entre l'homme et l'environnement ainsi que les changements climatiques. Parmi ses principaux projets figurent l'établissement de chronologies pour les
dynamiques entre les humains et les Néandertaliens, les migrations humaines vers l'Amérique du Nord, et les relations entre les humains et le climat dans l'Amazonie précolombienne. Elle a travaillé dans des laboratoires de pointe en spectrométrie de masse par accélérateur et possède une expertise en analyse des isotopes stables et des résidus organiques. Actuellement, Lorena bénéficie d'une bourse Leverhulme Trust (2023-2026) pour examiner le rôle des changements climatiques dans la colonisation précoce de l'Amérique du Sud.
